By all accounts, Mumford & Sons’ return to Boston was a triumphant one. The venue: House of Blues, a massive leap in capacity from the band’s show at the Middle East back in May, and one of the biggest rooms it has headlined in America overall. The crowd: very, very sold out, and well in advance – just like virtually every other date Mumford has played anywhere this year. And the setlist: stellar, with a nice mix of new songs and unexpected covers keeping things interesting among the expected tracks from the group’s lone album, Sigh No More.
In many ways, the show turned into Mumford & Sons’ own celebration of its runaway 2010 success, and the band was eager to share the spotlight with its friends, its opening acts and, of course, the people the group clearly feels most indebted to at this stage: its fans. The Sons marched out an array of special guests, including a two-piece horn section that punched up the group’s sound in the large club. Openers Cadillac Sky and King Charles – whose unique sense of personal style made him perhaps the most eye-grabbing member of this touring lineup – also came back out to re-join the party, giving the second half of the set a rousing campfire collaboration sort of feel. We’ll let the pictures speak for this show in this abbreviated recap, but first…
